James E. Brondige

James Eugene Brondige, born on November 3, 1941, passed away at home, surrounded by the family he spent his lifetime protecting, guiding, and loving. He lived with a quiet strength, was steady, thoughtful, and rooted in purpose. He led by example, teaching his children to stand behind their beliefs and to hold family at the center of all things. The lessons he taught were not loud; they were lived.

In 1966, James swore an oath to the Michigan State Police and became known as Trooper Brondige. He carried the weight of this responsibility with grace, resolve, and integrity. He offered protection and stability to those who depended on him. It was through this job that he met the love of his life, Linda. They married in 1977, and from that moment, he built a home defined by devotion and faith. He was a husband whose loyalty didn’t waver, whose presence steadied every storm, and whose love shaped the family and life they built together. After he retired, he continued a life of service to his family, his community, and through his faith. Whether it was serving as a crossing guard or helping at the soup kitchen, service to others was part of him. He led by example.

James understood the power of stories and their ability to shape a moment. He was always ready to share a tale, correct a little grammar, and offer a joke to lighten the mood. He was the family jokester, the best keeper of grandpa jokes, and he will be remembered as a man who understood simple joy and carried laughter like a gift – one he was always ready to give away.

As an avid stamp collector, James enjoyed the tales and pieces of history that the stamps provided. Going to the post office was an adventure, browsing the many sheets and designs. He would talk for hours with anyone who would listen, and we will miss these stories and quiet moments with him. He was an adventurer and, later in life, traveled with Linda to many states. Together, they found peace in the quiet roads, the new horizons, the beautiful sunsets, and the simple joy of being together. These journeys are now lasting memories.

James is survived by his wife, Linda, his wife of 49 years, and his five children, Robert (Luza) Brondige, Sara (Michael) Nelson, Rebecca (Jacob) Christians, Derek (Andrea) Brondige, Joseph (Sara) Brondige. He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren: Joslyne, Chloe, Katelyn, Andrew, Gabriel, Frances, and Eli. Each carries a piece of his spirit and legacy. He is also survived by his siblings: Shirley Brendel and Leroy (Marilyn) Brondige; extended family: Kathleen (Edward) Dickenson, Richard (Lori) Lewis, Sharon Featherly, Desiree Liszewski, Cindy (George) Ray, Mary (Kevin) McDaniel, Elizabeth (David) Bombalski, and many nieces and nephews; and friends who will remember him fondly. James is preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Gladys Brondige; his cherished granddaughter, Eden Brondige; and his brothers-in-law, David Brendel and Philip Liszewski.

James lived a life shaped by service, softened by laughter, and anchored in love. His legacy is his family; they will forever carry forward his lessons of strength, joy, and love.

Visitation will take place on Monday, August 17, 2026, from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., with a Rosary Service at 7:30 p.m., at Verdun Family Funeral Home, 303 S. Bridge Street, Belding, Michigan. James' Funeral Mass will take place on Tuesday Morning, August 18, 2026, at St. Mary Miriam Catholic Church, 9041 Krupp Road, Belding, Michigan 48809. On Tuesday, visitation will begin at 10:00 AM in the Parish Hall, with Michigan State Police Honor Guard members paying tribute. Mass will begin at 11:00 a.m. with burial to follow at St. Mary Cemetery.
