Listen to Obituary

Charles Allen “Charlie” McRoberts. Age 81, of Belding passed away at home under hospice care surrounded by his loving family following a long illness, on Friday morning, May 29, 2026. He was born on June 30, 1944, in Midland, Michigan, son of Leon “Lee” and Leota Fay (Wendt) McRoberts, both of whom preceded him in death. Charles attended Midland High School and relocated to Belding where he, soon after, met the love of his life, Susan Horsley. The courtship was brief and the couple exchanged vows on December 17, 1966, and they shared nearly 60 years of marriage. They relocated to Wyoming where Charles worked the oil rigs for a time and moved back to Michigan where Charles worked in manufacturing for many years and later worked as a tree trimmer for several years prior to retirement. In his spare time Charles enjoyed tinkering with anything that needed fixing or modifying. Charles would spend countless hours out in his workshop, even staying out there all night if he was in the middle of a project. He enjoyed cars of all types, especially vintage ones and fast ones, with his favorite being the 1957 Chevy. He was a collector of anything from antique furniture to interesting license plates. He loved to play checkers and card games of all types and taught the grandkids and great grandkids all he could. He will be dearly missed, especially by the grandkids who affectionately referred to him as “Papa”, and sometimes, even, “Superman”.

In addition to his dear wife, Susan, Charles is survived by his daughter, Lee Ann McRoberts of Belding; grandchildren, Tara Mulder, Derek Gillson, Kari J Gillson, Sara McRoberts and Michael Palethorpe; and great grandchildren, Karlea, Kadin, Dyllen, Tayler, Carsyn, Gracelyn, Oaklen, Logan, Cameron, and Justin; a brother, Thomas Randall; several brothers- and sisters-in-law; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Lori Horsley, and siblings, Marjorie Rathbun, Barnard “Barney” McRoberts, Jean VonEitzen, Willa Short, Francis “Frank” McRoberts, Alvin McRoberts, Lee “Jr.” McRoberts, Doris Millwood, Douglas “Doug” McRoberts, James “Jim” McRoberts, Charles “Charlie” McRoberts, and Christine “Chris” Empie.
