Alfred S. "Butch" Capen

Alfred Stanley “Butch” Capen, age 74, of Kentwood, passed away unexpectedly at home on March 14, 2026. He was born in Edmore, Michigan, on December 10, 1951, son of Leonard Pete and Mabel Mae (Martin) Capen, both of whom preceded him in death. He attended Montabella Schools and worked on the family farm for most of his life. He was a great conversationalist and loved to shoot the breeze with friends and family. He enjoyed a good meal and loved to fish, always looking forward to and planning his next big trip to Canada to bring home the limit allowable at the border crossing. He collected guns and other items, and enjoyed finding a great bargain of any kind, even if he had to do a little trash-picking to do it. “One man’s trash is sometimes another person’s treasure.” He had a free spirit which will be missed by all who knew him.

Among the many who will miss Alfred are his dear children, Adam (Jeremy) Carroll of Belding and Jennifer Moore of Kentwood; his grandchildren Brooklyn Hine of Mt. Pleasant, and Ethan Carroll of Belding; and his great grandson, Ja’syah Ramir Hine; and several cousins and many other family members and friends.

A Celebration of Life Gathering and Memorial Service will take place on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at Verdun Family Funeral Home, 303 S. Bridge Street, Belding, Michigan 48809, with Reverend Genea Bogart officiating. The family will greet visitors beginning at 1:00 p.m. and the service will begin at 3:00 p.m. with refreshments to follow.
