Scott E. Gladding

January 7, 1970 — May 20, 2020

Scott Eldon Gladding, age 50, of Belding, passed away following a brief battle with cancer on May 20, 2020 at Spectrum Health, Renucci House, in Rapids, under hospice care. Scott was born on January 7, 1970, in Greenville, Michigan. His parents, Steven Douglas and Beverlie Jean ( Silverthorn ) Gladding of Gowen, both survive. Scott was a 1989 graduate of Greenville High School and completed two years of college course work. He met the love of his life, Shelley Jean King, while still a sophomore in high school. They dated for six years and exchanged vows on May 1, 1993 at Shiloh Community Church in Orleans and shared 27 years of marriage. Scott started a successful career in the tool and die industry, as a Grinder, and continued to increase his knowledge and skill as a long term employee of Wiesen, Incorporated in Belding where he worked as a General Manager until just a couple weeks prior to his death. Scott loved the great outdoors and would hunt, fish, ride quads with friends, go camping and take part in any outdoor activity whenever he could. He was very involved in the community, coaching softball for Belding Youth Baseball League for many years, announcing football and girls basketball games for Belding Schools, helping the marching band with his building skills as a “prop dad”, serving on the Belding Recreation Board, was a driving force on the Belding Labor Day Celebration Committee for nearly 10 years, volunteered with the 4-H organization and Kent County Youth Fair for many years, and helped in countless other ways both large and small whenever called upon.

In addition to his parents and loving wife Shelley, Scott is survived by his daughter, Sydney Joan Gladding of Belding; a brother, Jason ( Tricia ), Gladding of Gowen; nieces and nephews, Kayla Christiansen, Andy Christiansen, Jacob Gladding and Katie Gladding; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and co-workers; and Jo VanderRoer, a special family friend who has been like a second daughter to Scott. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Robert and Susan Silverthorn and Stan and Laura ( Deacan ) Gladding and his father- and mother-in-law, Michael and Joan King. .
