Dorothy Edna Button, age 96, of Belding, formerly of Greenville, passed away on Monday, June 20, at Metron of Belding Nursing Care Facility following a long illness. She was born on January 15, 1915 just east of Turk Lake in Montcalm Township one of six children to William and Rozena (Schliephacke) Dennis. She attended Brown School and Turk Lake School in rural Montcalm County and married Lester Button on April 29, 1932. She became employed by Gibson’s Manufacturing in 1937 at age 22, and she continued her employment for 41 years serving in several capacities and retired from Frigidaire in 1978. An assignment in which she took a great deal of pride in was when she assisted with the war effort in building the flap assemblies for bomber planes. She traveled with four other women to Willow Run Airport to learn the craft of riveting and returned to Greenville to train the local workers. At the time of her retirement, she had the highest seniority of any female employee at the factory. Dorothy also enjoyed several pastimes including gardening—especially sharing her roses and plants, baking and bus trips with friends. She was a regular at U.A.W. Retiree Dinners where she would socialize with all of her former co-workers. She also cherished time shared with her dear family at home and at the lake enjoying pontoon boat rides and evening sunsets.
Dorothy leaves to cherish her memory, a daughter, Deloris (Bob) Leppink of Belding; grandchildren Laurie (Dan) Lisuk of Leland, Michigan, Gay (Richard) Cole of Spring Lake, Michigan and John (Jackie) Leppink of Belding; great grandchildren Halley and Juliana Lisuk, John and Katie Cole and Robert, Andrew, and Arianna Leppink; nieces and nephews, Norma Linebaugh, Phyllis Higgins, Barbara Wittkopp, Sandra Stephens, Lou Ann Miller, Judy Witt, Gary Dennis, Nancy Buckley and Duane White. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings Arthur Dennis, Leilah Bowers, Herbert Dennis, Gertrude White and Lavern Dennis.
A Funeral Service will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 23, 2011 at Verdun Family Funeral Home, 303 S. Bridge Street, Belding, Michigan, with Pastor Bruce Burfield officiating. Visitation will take place on Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Private burial and committal services will take place at Rest Haven Memory Gardens.
